Qoros hires former GM China boss as CEO

Chinese carmaker Qoros appointed Phil Murtaugh, a former General Motors Co. executive, to run the company after struggling to boost its sales.

Murtaugh, who led GM’s China operations and ran the then-Chrysler Group’s Asian operations, started as CEO of Qoros on Monday, the company said in a statement. His predecessor at Qoros, Guo Qian, has moved back to Chery Automobile, the company said.

Murtaugh, 60, was the CEO of electric carmaker Coda Automotive, which filed for bankruptcy in 2013.

Qoros is struggling to compete against global automakers Volkswagen Group and GM in its home market. The company can produce about 150,000 vehicles a year in its factory outside of Shanghai, but sold 6,967 units last year in China, according to LMC Automotive data.

Qoros has been selling vehicles in its European test market, Slovakia, since late 2013. The brand plans to expand sales across Europe by 2016, Qoros sales chief Stefano Villanti told Automotive News Europe in June. Qoros has said it expects eventually to sell more than 10 percent of its cars in Europe.
